Club County Cork
Pyramid scheme pub watch launched across East Cork

Taken from the East Cork Journal, 10/02/10

THREE separate Pub Watch schemes, covering Midleton, Carrigtwohill and Cloyne and surrounding area were launched at the Midleton Park Hotel on Thursday last, February 4th, with the aim of curbing incidents of public order and crime, and to enable a quick response from both the community of vintners and Gardai when incidents occur in pubs.

The scheme works in a pyramid-fashion with each pub linked to two others. If an alert is raised at one pub, they will first notify the Gardai, and then notify their other two 'linked 1 pubs. Each pub contacted is responsible for contacting a further two, thus creating a domino effect pub watch, with information being shared rapidly between vintners.

The idea to establish Pub Watch in these areas came about in November 2009, when thirty one publicans from Midleton and the surrounding areas partook in Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training which was deliveredby the Health Promotion Dept. HSE South. The Club Co Cork Drug & Alcohol Awareness Training Programme is funded by the Southern Regional Drugs Task Force and was developed by the Health Promotion Dept in partnership with An Garda Siochana and publicans. Aoife Ni Chonchuir, Health Promotion Officer, HSE South who co-ordinates the course and delivers a session on drug and alcohol awareness stated, "This course focuses on real issues which arise in pubs and clubs, and looks at identifying practical solutions to dealing with such issues. The publicans of Midleton and surrounding area wished to establish pub watch and as a result local Gardaf, namely Sgt. Claire Kenneally, Superintendent Flor Horan, representation from Health Promotion Dept, local publicans and myself came together to establish three separate schemes".

The schemes will operate in the Midleton, Carrigtwohill and Cloyne areas and are designed to ensure a quick response from gardai to incidents of public order.

The idea for the project was mooted last November when 31 publicans from the greater Midleton area took part in drug and alcohol awareness training provided by the health promotion unit in HSE South.

The so-called Club County Cork Drug & Alcohol Awareness Training Programme was developed by the HSE in partnership with the gardai and was funded by the Southern Regional Drugs Task Force.

Liam Clancy, Martina Munnelly, Superintendent Tom Myers, Aoife Ni Chonchuir and Garda Andrew Geary display the new informative beer mats at the ‘Fermoy Says No To Drugs’ campaign launch in the Grand Hotel last week.

Gardai, support groups, publicans and public officials were all present as the ‘Fermoy Says No To Drugs’ campaign was officially launched in The Grand Hotel last Thursday, April 30 in time for the May bank holiday weekend.

As part of the campaign, messages in English and Polish on beer mats detailing the harmful effects and the risks associated with cannabis, ecstasy, alcohol and cocaine have been circulated to pubs in the area.

Contact details for the local community drugs worker in Fermoy, and the Polish-speaking addiction counselor service based in Arbour House, St. Finbarr’s Hospital, Cork City are also included on the beer mats, while publicans in Fermoy have agreed to display posters on illicit drugs in their venues.

“What this campaign demonstrates is that publicans in Fermoy do care, they do want to tackle drug and alcohol misuse,” Aoife Ni Chonchuir, Health Promotion Department with the Health Service Executive said.

“What the publicans are saying loud and clear is that drug use and drug dealing will not be tolerated in Fermoy and that alcohol misuse will not be tolerated in Fermoy and that is a message that will be loud and clear to punters frequenting pubs and clubs in the Fermoy region.”
