THE people of Fermoy can make a difference. That was the message of gardai and local drug awareness workers in the town this week, as they launched a new leaflet highlighting what people can do to help their town fight the scourge of drugs. More than 2,000 local teens have been surveyed anonymously by the Fermoy Community Drugs Initiative on their drug and alcohol use, and the results will be published at an open evening in its new Pike Road premises next Thursday at 7.30pm. The idea behind the event is to highlight local support services that are available in the town and the services trying to combat drug use in society nationall, including drugs and alcohol workers, mental health service, Health Service Executive services and local GPs, sports clubs and activities available for young people. The survey was conducted in all the three secondary schools in Fermoy.

It focused on the pressures of peer groups, the causes of drug use, the implications of various other pressures and the mental health of our young people.
